This page is about our own connector products which are under development.
Why a new type of connector?
Traditionally FFC connectors have been designed to be used on rigid PCB, such as FR4. The size and weight of connector has not been a problem, strength and solid cable connection has been more important. When devices get smaller and there is a need for more integrated solutions or embedded connectivity is required. Frequency handling is important part of the connector.
When we have been asking around from electronics designers, what are their typical problems when designing new innovative products, we have heard that:
- Size and/or weight of traditional connectors is not suited to their product, the connectors may weight more than the rest of the electronics.
- Traditional connectors are not well suited for flexible PCBs; they were designed for rigid PCBs.
- The RF shielding is not implemented in connector, it requires additional engineering.
We looked into these problems and found that there exist several good connectors, which each solve some problems, but not all mentioned above. There are two main reasons
- Flexible PCB is a still a quite new requirement
- Importance of EMI protection is still growing, due to increasing number of IoT and other appliances around us
Sometimes the connectors were designed with flexible PCBs in mind, sometimes not. For designer the end result has been that just is no space left for traditional connectors. And that is becoming an issue.
We have applied a patent for new kind of flexible connector which fixes these problems.
Our new SFFC connectors are going through final test rounds and are available for sales very soon. Since the colors are not yet decided, we didn’t show you any images of the new connector. We will show you soon the finalized product.
The overall technical benefits of our connector are:
- can be used with standard FFC’s
- weight is comparable to cable weight
- size is closer to cable dimensions
