Mrs Brigitte LANZ, Dr.Tech, has joined New Cable Corporation as Chief Technology Officer.

We have exciting news from Oulu, the capital of printed electronics. We are proud to announce, that Mrs Brigitte LANZ, Dr. Tech, has joined New Cable Corporation as Chief Technology Officer.

Brigitte is not only innovative and enthusiastic about experimenting and research, she is also highly experienced in materials, semiconductors and optics which are exactly the qualities New Cable Corporation has demand for in its current development phase.

One challenge that Printed Electronics industry faces along with other industries in the coming years, will be a drastic reduction demand in plastics use and in finding more ecologically viable and recyclable materials. New Cable Corporation has taken an active role in saving the environment and is engaged in a research work to in order to lead the development in its field. This will be one of the ambitious company goals Brigitte Lanz will be in charge of as part of her role as CTO.

In addition to this, Brigittes expertise will benefit all the customers of New Cable Corporation, since she will be joining the Futures Development Team to work in co-operation with Tommi Rintala and Antti Backman. In the immediate future, they will be conducting further development for Shielded Flat Flexible Cable (SFFC) series, connectors and customized OEM cables with embedded electronics for vehicle-, high-end consumer electronics and aviation industries.

Additionally, our German customers have been expressing their gratitude of getting Brigitte Lanz on the team, since they will now be served in their own language in all technical development matters.

New Cable Corporation Ltd and Verkotan Ltd – partnership to ensure performance and safety

Today, it would be challenging to find more important qualities for a new product design than performance and safety. These are the two main considerations inherent in the printed electronics design processes of New Cable Corporation. Testing of these critical qualities is now made in cooperation with an independent, FINAS T287 and CTIA accredited testing laboratory, Verkotan Ltd.

This transformation will be led by the aviation, automotive and wearable industries, where weight, space and quality of the signal matters the most. This includes embedded sensors, antennas etc. to flat and flexible printed electronic solutions. New Cable Corporation has ensured the achievement of these goals by committing to collaboration with Verkotan, an accredited testing house offering a wide range of testing services. Verkotan is a Finland based, internationally operating provider of professional testing services varying from RF exposure testing through OTA and Antenna testing to tailored test solutions. Their tailored test solutions offer for example 5G and Narrowband IoT testing and various performance tests in order to direct product development in the right direction. Verkotan works rapidly, running the test process within 6 to 21 days to provide for the dynamic needs of the product development process.

In the coming years, this partnership will contribute to fortifying the role of New Cable Corporation as a designer and manufacturer of high performance and secure modern cable solutions for the versatile needs of its customers.

Prinse’18 Update

Now as Prinse’18 is going with full speed, I take this time to thank you for all your nice words at the conference. It is lovely to be here with you, and to show you all what we have done since the last time we met.

Product launch is always a fun to have and we started selling our SFFC (Shielded Flat Flexible Cable). First official sales were completed to corporate customer from UK.

Flexibility Needed

Traditionally we have designed and used electrical devices based on non-flexible PCB’s. They have many advantages, one of the biggest is the easy manufacturing. Feels like any street corner has a small company, who can manufacture FR4 based PCB, pick’n place the components and deliver them to our customers.

We have changed our attitude

Nowadays, we as customers, are not willing to carry heavy external electronic devices. We want them to be integrated to our clothing and to our behavior.

At the same time, we wish our devices be more independent and more aware of surroundings. We don’t want our applications give our personal data to anybody, except for our friends in Internet.

And we should not forget our attitude for maintenance; we wish that the device does not need to be charged, configured or interacted in any way. It should just work out-of-the-box.

What to think?

Customer needs are challenging, and most the requirements are such that nobody is willing to pay for those. Unless they suddenly become really important.

Starting with small steps, one could analyse that is the device better, and is the customer therefore willing to pay more for it, if:

  • Is it lighter? saving weight saves resources and is also ecological thing. Also transportation of device is cheaper.
  • Is it flexible?
  • Is it integrated into customer surroundings?
  • Is it protected from RF interference?

If the answer is YES, to any one of those questions, perhaps it would be the time to look for ways to make your application more flexible. Since those are the main benefits of SFFC cabling enables.

IoT means RF


When we think about IoT, we often forget that we are usually also talking about wireless communication. Even though we are protected with legislation, which controls the power and frequencies of communication between devices, problems may arise. Our message in short is:

The more there are devices sharing frequency channel, the more disturbed the channel is.

In the old era of computing and communication studies, Shannon and Hartley studied and defined “the maximum rate at which information can be transmitted over a communications channel” (nice sentence from Wikipedia).

IoT is about wireless – is it?

If I start talking you about new IoT application (or device), first visualization which comes to your mind, is most likely wireless device. Even though IoT (Internet of Things) actually stands for devices connected to internet. As term connected implies, some networking is involved. However, it does not imply wired nor wireless networking. We have just been so often talked about wireless IoT, that we always assume that everybody else is talking too.

Most important challenges in IoT are power and communication. If we are using wired communication, it is very convenient to use parallel wires to power the device. When wireless communication is used, batteries are used most often. This can change very quickly, when solar powered and wireless powered devices become more common.

Every open wire, which transmits alternating current, usually called signal, is a sending antenna. And every open wire is receiver antenna, whether it is sending or not. If the open wire has a a signal, and there are powerful enough RF around it, the resulting signal (measured from the wire) is the sum of signals (original signal and received signal from antenna).

Wireless is Shared Channel

When we are talking of wireless IoT, we are talking about shared channel. All wireless devices which are communicating wireless using same bandwidth can be heard by other devices. In this I refer to radio signal, not the data, which should be encrypted anyway. Radio signal is the media and data is the payload.

Like in football game; the more there are viewers shouting at the same time, more difficult it is to hear the actual message, unless the message is same. In IoT it usually is not. With a number of sensors, a number of different measurements should be received.

When we wish to overcome the disturbance of signal “next door”, we usually just turn “up the knob”. In IoT, this is impractical solution, since using more power to radio means bigger power consumption. And since most IoT devices don’t have external power sources with infinite capacity, that would mean running out of batteries sooner.

How we can protect our wireless IoT devices? The normal way:

  • Choose radio protocol and frequency with care
  • Design IoT device with care
  • Shield the electronics from RF with casing
  • Only antenna(s) should be outside of the shielding/case
  • Use shielded cables when transmitting data from PCB to PCB, if there is any possibility that the open wire would act as antenna
