As the first days of the new year were approaching, I was asked what I saw as biggest trends of 2019. Here are two things which I think, and hope, will increase this new year:
Making small lifestyle changes
One could argue, that these are just the the same thing, with different words, but I slightly disagree.
Thinking green could be shortened into idea, that we stop to think what are the things we need and what are those we just want. This is not very original thought, and it is not my own. But in the sense of circular economy, I recycle the idea . If we know the difference of our needs and wants, maybe it is easier for us to accept that sometimes we need to let got of something, to create a better world.
Making small changes can contribute to a major change. I am not all that green in all my living choices, but I think it was echoing also in our christmas table. Traditionally finnish christmas celebration centerpiece has been the ham. Due to historical agriculture background, possibility of eating lot of meat in the darkest time of the year has been one of the key points in the party in the minds of finnish people. We have carried this tradition into our generation, as usually happens.
However, as I was now evaluating about our choices, I found out that we actually have changed our table contents into more ecological direction. We have already changed years earlier the ham to turkey, but again this year we had more vegetables than previous years. Oh, yes, we still have chocolate and other treats, but we have made some small changes, which actually cumulates towards bigger result.
Maybe the third trend, which I didn’t mention in the beginning is that we can, and we should, do choices which give positive effect to the local area. This can be seen as something simple as replacing bananas with local grown vegetables (bananas don’t grow that well in Finland) in mid-winter fiesta. But it also includes things like supporting the local service area economy (getting a massage nearby health spa).
I argue that these two main trends of 2019 are actually two sides of the same coin. The thinking green is setting up goals and making small lifestyle changes, is how we get there.
I think that year 2019 can be as good we wish to make it to be and even small changes count in global scale. Shared laughter is double the joy.

He has got a long track in customer service and B2B sales. Before coming to Finland 20 years ago, he was active in sales and marketing of Carglass automotive windshields in France as well as marketing Rockwool insulation and acoustical ceilings in Holland and Belgium. In Finland he has worked in exporting sound attenuators in air handling systems (HVAC) for former IVK Tuote Oy, nowadays Lindab, and in exporting wood chippers for LHM Hakkuri Oy.
Pierre has always been involved in selling ecological solutions like noise attenuation, heat insulation and latest wood chips for improving our ecological footprint. This makes him eager to contribute to the future development of more sustainable cables with us.
Our French and Dutch speaking customers have been expressing their gratitude of getting Pierre De Bie on the team, since they will now be served in their own language.

Mr Antti Backman, Chief Design Officer, New Cable Corporation writes about the effect Flat Cable Harness has on radio controlled vehicles:
“I have played around with radio controlled (RC) vehicles for few tens of years. For a long time I thought that these cars, tanks and aeroplanes are crappy; brushed electric motors and small combustion motors combined to Megahertz frequency range radio controls with modest transmission power. Within last ten years I have had to change my opinion on these devices, that have turned to magnificent pieces of gadgets and I love those.
Technology development has brought brushless motors and lithium-polymer batteries along with powerful Gigahertz frequency range radio controls to these devices. One thing has still been bothering me. The cables and the connectors. Especially the connectors have been annoying as the high amperage cables require sufficient connection. These connectors tend to be very bulky and difficult to use. One problematic thing with these cables and connectors is the heat generated by the high amperage. The cooling after the usage is also very slow.
When we introduced Shielded Flat Flexible Cables (SFFC) in 2016 we had plans to use those not only in automation electronics but also in vehicles. The last two years have been more than hectic, I have bought drones and learned how to fly with them. While assembling the drones I noted that it would be quite cool to use SFFC also on flying things. I had already “flattened” one RC car and the second one was even more integrated in terms of cable harnesses.
The “more flattened” RC car was introduced to premium car manufacturers during the late autumn. I was quite happy to learn how the engineers and the designers were surprised about the weight difference the two RC car cabling had (we had also the “stock” car with round cables with us). The round cable set weighted 25 grams and our custom made flat harness 2 grams. We gave the opportunity for the designers and the engineers to drive these cars and after each “race” I noted the long lasting heat from the round cable car.
I have to admit that I am very thrilled from that late autumn event. In real size vehicles our cables really make the difference. It seems that we are going to save the world, one cable at a time.

As we demonstrate our Shielded Flat Flexible Cable (SFFC) to potential customers, we almost always hear the same questions. How can a cable this flat have have all the advantages and efficiency it is claimed to have? How do all the qualities fit in just 0.173 mm?
We decided to open up the structure in more details to give you a better understanding of our amazing product.
In a search for the optimal structure we have tried several paths. However, throughout the process the main requirements have been same:
High signal to noise ratio
High power carrying capacity
High EMI protection
The thickness of our SFFC was not always that important, but there is a definite relationship between flexibility and thickness. When you need flexibility, the cable needs to be thin.
Other relevant reasons for the selection of the materials:
Manufacturing process needs to be controllable
Pricing of the materials needs to be stable
Materials need to have predictable life-time
SFFC and the materials need to be compatible with existing applications (and connectors)
Layer structure has to be lightweight
We wish to reduce the amount of plastics used
SFFC reference connector is Hirose FH12 -series. Stay also tuned for our own connector, which will be launched on early 2019.
The use of plastics in under revolution – this non-degradable material manufactured from oil has faced and will continue to face even stronger demands to be traded into more environmentally friendly materials. For the plastics used, its recyclability will play a major role.

Brigitte is not only innovative and enthusiastic about experimenting and research, she is also highly experienced in materials, semiconductors and optics which are exactly the qualities New Cable Corporation has demand for in its current development phase.
One challenge that Printed Electronics industry faces along with other industries in the coming years, will be a drastic reduction demand in plastics use and in finding more ecologically viable and recyclable materials. New Cable Corporation has taken an active role in saving the environment and is engaged in a research work to in order to lead the development in its field. This will be one of the ambitious company goals Brigitte Lanz will be in charge of as part of her role as CTO.
